She appeared on the BBC show on Easter Sunday, 2016, when she spoke movingly about undergoing a stem cell transplant to overcome terminal blood cancer which had inspired her to launch a campaign to help others with the life-threatening condition. A special peal devised by fellow ringers — the ‘Julie McDonnell Doubles — was rung at her local church, historic St George’s in Brede, East Sussex, with members of the congregation asked to make a donation to raise public awareness about leukaemia.
